Stained Glass

The term stained glass refers either to the material of colored glass or to the art and craft of working with it. Throughout its thousand-year history the term "stained glass" was applied almost exclusively to the windows of churches, cathedrals, and other significant buildings. Although traditionally made in flat panels and used as windows, the creations of modern stained glass artists also include three-dimensional structures and sculpture.

Modern vernacular usage has often extended the term "stained glass" to include domestic leadlight and objets d'art created from lead came and copper foil glasswork such as exemplified in the famous lamps of Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Stained glass, as an art and a craft, requires the artistic skill to conceive the design, and the engineering skills necessary to assemble the decorative piece, traditionally a window, so that it will fit snugly into the window frame for which is is made and also, especially in the larger windows, is capable of supporting its own weight and surviving the elements. Many large windows have withstood the test of time and remained substantially intact since the late Middle Ages. In Western Europe they constitute the major form of pictorial art to have survived. In this context, the purpose of a stained glass window is not to allow those within a building to see the world outside or even primarily to admit light but rather to control it. For this reason stained glass windows have been described as 'illuminated wall decorations'.

The Process

If you have any questions, please email me at info@artworkbycaroline.com.

The stained glass works I create are always done from the photos you send me. Send me as many as you can as it is helpful when choosing the best photo for the portrait, however, I only work from the one photo chosen. Let me know if you have a favorite photo and I'll let you know if it's suitable to work from.

After I receive your deposit, I'll provide you with an email address for uploading your high resolution photos. If you'd like me to evaluate your photo before you order your portrait, just email me at info@artworkbycaroline.com and I'll send you the upload information. You can also mail them to me as prints or on a CD. I'll return the prints to you along with the finished portrait.

After we've decided on the photo, I begin by drawing a rough pencil sketch on low quality drawing paper. It's at this stage that I make sure all the proportions are correct and that I've created an exact likeness of your beloved companion.

Once I'm satisfied with the sketch, I convert it to a stained glass pattern.

I then cut the glass and assemble the portrait using the copper foil method.

I require a 50% nonrefundable deposit when I accept your commission and before starting the stained glass piece. Turnaround time depends on how many commissions I have and I generally have a waiting list of 2 to 4 weeks. Please let me know if you need the painting for a special occasion and I'll try to accommodate you if possible.
When I have completed the portrait I'll send you a digital copy via email. Upon acceptance I require the balance due after which I will ship the drawing to you.
